One of our oldest clients calls us to let us know they need to shoot a mini documentary in NYC two days from now. You take the call and remember that two days from today is also their birthday and they usually go on a trip this time each year. You ask them if this will interrupt their vacation plans while gathering the pertinent information for the project. When sharing the project notes with your producer and creative team, you remember to mention that this client really hates scenes shot in 60p (she told the director this after the last shoot, and you have the notes in her profile on the CRM tool you live in every day). As the crew packs gear to fly to NYC, you remember to hand a birthday card signed by the staff to the producer traveling on the shoot.

Will this happen with every client on every job? No. But this is the level of customer service we strive for with each client. Our growth has everything to do with our relationships, and we want you to lead our conversations when it comes to new business with clients, both old and new.

So what kinds of skills do you need to be successful in this role?

  • Excellent listening skills. You won’t receive a sales pitch to memorize on your first day. We’ll share our culture and values with you, and ask that you absorb them into your way of communicating with clients.
  • Incredible attention to detail. Great client management is about trust. Our clients need to feel heard and then see evidence that they were heard in your communication with them over the phone and by email.
  • Enthusiasm. This is a great company that makes great work, and we want someone who is excited to continue over delivering to current clients. We want you to be excited about being the voice that convinces new clients that we’re the right partner for their creative needs.
  • Vision. We don’t want someone who checks boxes or thinks within them. We want someone who has ideas for creative, who brings new opportunities to the table, and who dreams big.
  • A non-sales approach. While it might sound counterintuitive, this is a business development role that doesn’t require knocking down doors or maintaining a pipeline. We don’t really love the sales approach, in fact, almost all of our new business comes from inbound inquiries. We want clients (current and potential) to feel listened to and supported…not sold to.

So if I’m not “selling” what will I be doing?
This business development role is a hybrid position that requires an ability to be visionary (read: sell a vision) combined with an inherent ability to understand people and what motivates them. We will ask you to be the first line of defense when new business inquiries come in. You will set up calls to better understand the needs of the client and their project and then share that information with your creative team. You will be responsible for getting answers about a project from a client in a casual way that feels like a conversation with an old friend but also gets them excited about working with Guy Bauer. You will be a brand ambassador and a thoughtful listener simultaneously.
